In recent years, watershed studies and water quality assessments have revealed that farm operations can be significant contributors of non-point source pollution to the surface waters of Pierce County if not managed properly. Through a planned approach using Best Management Practices (BMP’s), non-point pollution can greatly be reduced. Conservation planning provides the landowner with useful guidance on pasture rotation, fencing design, gutters & downspouts and waste storage designs. In some cases the District is able to provide some financial assistance to landowners implementing best management practices.
In addition to its long running farm program, The District began its Stream Team program in 1994 to provide a community involvement and public education to Pierce County residents, both of which have helped establish PCD as a leader in innovative approaches to the problem of non-point source pollution. |
