Record Volunteer Numbers at 2023 MLK Day

At Pioneer Place II the whole team carries out a heavy tarp full to the brim with invasive plants

A tenacious crew digging the deepest blackberry hole we’ve ever seen at Bradley Lake park. Pierce Conservation District hosts a volunteer event for Martin Luther King Jr Day of Caring every year and this year we hosted AmeriCorps members from all around the Puget Sound! They joined community volunteers to improve restoration projects across four Habitat Stewardship sites in Puyallup and Fircrest.

Because of the pandemic, volunteer numbers were low on MLK Day for the past few years. This year we were very happy to get an incredible 76 volunteers. These volunteers cleared 22,663 square feet of invasive species in preparation for native planting events this spring.

This important work has a lasting impact on the environment. Among many benefits, the work volunteers increases wildlife habitat for native birds, amphibians, bugs and more. We have many more volunteer opportunities this spring. Check out our volunteer page to see our schedule and sign up!
